Colonies. With a daily growth rate of 5-6 mm, white, with a sparse aerial mycelium, often with yellow or green exudates. Conidia ("spermatia", "phialoconidia") obovate or ellipsoidal, aseptate, colourless, often absent in homothallic strains. Ascomata. Maturing within 13-20 days, olivaceous or grey-green in reflected light, superficial, spherical or ovate, ostiolate 180-400 μm, with a brown wall of textura intricata or textura epidermoidea in surface view, cells 2-4 μm broad; ascomatal hairs numerous, long, flexuous, dichotomously or otherwise branched, mainly in the upper part, dark brown, indistinctly septate, verrucose or warty, 4-5 μm broad near the base. Asci. Fasciculate, clavate or fusiform, stalked, 8-spored, evanescent, 30-43 × 13-18 μm. Ascospores. Limoniform, biapiculate, bilaterally flattened, often rather irregular, brown when mature, rather thick-walled, containing numerous globules, 11-14 × 8-11 × 7-9 μm, with an apical germ pore.
