Rhytisma acerinum is a parasitic fungus causing black spots with yellow edges on maples (Acer pseudoplatanus). The black spots are the fruiting body. The mycelium of the fungus lives within the tree and infects it via the roots. It is not a life-threatening parasite for the tree.
