One Species at a Time Podcast: Bacteria

April 02, 2014 13:19

In recent years, scientists have documented the important roles of bacteria associated with various "habitats" on different areas of human bodies in maintaining human health, but little such work has been done on other mammals. Recently, however, researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute studied the bacterial communities found on the skin of humpback whales and concluded that there may be a core group of skin bacteria associated with good health in humpback whales. The importance of many bacteria to the well being of many plants is well known, a topic that is the subject of this One Species at a Time podcast from Encyclopedia of Life.
