Explore Biodiversity Resources

The Encyclopedia of Life works with several institutions and organizations to leverage the information and tools collectively available to improve understanding of life on Earth. Some of our resource partners are listed below, along with additional websites that provide educational biodiversity content. If you know of a resource that uses the Encyclopedia of Life, please let us know about it so we may share it here. Send an email to education [at] eol.org.

Resources for Understanding Science and Evolution

The study of biodiversity rests on two important foundations: the scientific method, and an understanding of evolution. Use these resources to learn more about the ideas behind biodiversity research.

Science and the Scientific Method :

Understanding Science

The mission of Understanding Science is to provide a fun, accessible, and free resource that accurately communicates what science is and how it works. This project encourages an engagement with science that begins with teacher preparation and ends with broader public understanding.

BioQuest Curriculum Consortium

Evolution:

Understanding Evolution

The Understanding Evolution website is a one-stop source for information on evolution. It includes resources for educators, current evolution-related news stories, and strategies for dealing with misconceptions about evolution.

National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NEScent)

Resources for Understanding Biodiversity

Animal Diversity Web

Animal Diversity Web is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology produced by the University of Michigan

GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility)

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international initiative focused on making biodiversity data available to everyone. In addition to offering data, GBIF establishes standards and provides technology services.

iNaturalist

iNaturalist is a website where people can record what they see in nature, get help with species identification, meet other nature lovers, and learn about the natural world. iNaturalist links to EOL as a resource for users to learn more about species they see or are interested in.

iSpot

iSpot is a web-based biodiversity identification tool for anyone interested in UK wildlife and it is part of the Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) project. iSpot users can upload pictures, share observations and get help with identification from experts in a friendly online community. iSpot links automatically to EOL species pages so individuals can learn more about the organisms they have identified.

IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature)

IUCN supports scientific research, manages field projects all over the world and brings communities together to develop and implement policy, laws and best practice.

NatureServe

NatureServe is a nonprofit conservation organization and network dedicated to providing the scientific information for effective conservation action.
