This article suggests that acorn squash is a variety of Cucurbita pepo, but many sources suggest that it is a variety of Cucurbita maxima. In general, Cucurbita pepo fruits have thin, edible skins or rinds, while other squash species have thick rinds that are not edible (which seems applicable to acorn squash).
