The natural area of distribution of the diatom Thalassiosira punctigera was along the coasts of the Indian and Pacific Ocean. It is presumed that the species reached Europe through transportation with cultured oysters around 1978. By drifting with the prevailing currents, this diatom could spread further along the European coasts. The first time this unicellular alga was observed in our regions, was in 1993, in the Western Scheldt estuary.
