Kākī or Black Stilt,
Himantopus novaezelandiae, New Zealand. One of the most endangered birds in the world. I went back to Ashley River mouth today and was hoping to see this baby again. After a fruitless search of about an hour around the area, and it just came to me. Not sure whether it's that I came to close to its nest or something else. It just appeared from nowhere and landed in front of me. And it started this calling that sounded like a stress signal to me. I think it sounded lost and no other pied stilts seem to take notice of it.
