Description
White Punk (Laetiporus portentosus) near Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. Photographed on 30 April 2006.
Growing on trunk of dead Eucalyptus sp. in depauperate, weedy eucalypt woodland. Texture appears to be due to insect attack.
Identity confirmed as Laetiporus portentosus by T. May, Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne - "There is nothing else this large that gets eaten out by insects in the same way. If you light the dried fruit body, it burns very slowly, and was used by Aboriginal people to carry fire."
