Hoplophoneus primaevus was a nimravid (cat-like carnivore) that lived during a portion of the Early Oligocene, 33.9-33.3 million years ago (http://paleobiodb.org/navigator/). About the size of a large leopard, H. primaevus would have closely resembled modern cats. It had elongated upper canines, much like the infamous Saber-toothed cats. Despite the morphological similarities, Nimravidae was not closely related to Felidae (Bryant 1991).
