Turf algae don’t have to eat because they make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis they take carbon dioxide and energy from the sun and convert them into sugar and oxygen. Photosynthesis takes place in organ-like parts in cells called chloroplasts. Because turf algae make their own food, they are producers.
