Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis ~ This small slipper-shaped orchid has a pinkish brown, sheathed stem about 2-6 inches tall, with a single small, oval basal leaf that emerges after the flower has appeared. Picking these lovely flowers can pull up the shallow bulb and destroy it. Fairy slippers bloom after the snow has melted in moist cool forests with decaying duff on the floor from montane to subalpine zones. This was shot in the Judith Mountains of Montana.
