Encyclia tampensis. Seeing Flickr friends photos reminded me it was time for the butterfly orchids to bloom! I raced over to a local plant I watch but with 20+ mph wind and sunlight from the wrong direction, I was only able to get an odd backlit shot and one that was too shady. Butterfly orchids are often found on pond cypress trees in wetlands but this one lives on a gnarly little scrub oak in a dry, sandy scrub community! It narrowly escaped a "controlled burn" last year that killed many others (ah, natural resource management in action). Palm Beach County, Florida.
