Chinchilla actually mean 'little chincha'. There are Natives of the Andes Mountains who are referred to as 'Chincha' and this is where the name comes from. Chinchillas almost became extinct due mostly to the fur industry. In their natural habitat they like to dwell in crevices and burrows. Chinchillas are very agile and can leap up to 6ft. Chinchillas are prey to such animals as foxes, snakes, and wild cats. They have a protective mechanism which release fur into the mouths of their predators. They also will spray urine on an attacker. A chinchillas diet can be omnivorous, ranging from fruits to bugs. Breeding takes approximately 4 months and usually yields 2 to 4 kits.
