There are various stories of men and women that lived in the seas. There is the 'wild woman', enveloped in nothing but seaweed that lived in the Zuiderzee. In 1403, she swam into Purmer Lake after the dike breached. The sea woman was caught in Edam, socialized and eventually exhibited in Haarlem. At the end of the 20th century, a similar specimen turned up on Texel; this time, it was a male version and he referred to himself as the 'wiervriend', or seaweed friend.
