The skate is the largest ray species found in the North Sea. It can grow to 2.5 meters long and weigh 100 kilogram. The skate used to be very common in the North Sea. Because this species is known as a delicacy, it used to be intensely fished. However, skates are only sexually mature at age twelve. The chance of being caught before reproducing was high and therefore they have almost disappeared. Until the early 1960s, egg capsules from the skate used to wash ashore regularly, but now that is extremely rare.
