Genus Distribution
The genus is broadly distributed in sub-Saharan Africa ranging from the Nile Basin to the Congo Basin and including Lake Malawi, Lake Victoria and Lake Albert. One species occurs as far west as the Ivory Coast. Some taxa are known to tolerate hypersaline conditions of Lake Assal in Djibouti.
