Description
Harvester termites, Tarangire, Tanzania. This is one of very few termite species whose workers are exposed and active above ground in daytime, and workers are unusually strongly pigmented compared to other termites. Harvester termites cut living and dead grass into short pieces and carry it back to their nest. It has been estimated that they consume up to 15% of standing hay and 50% of grass litter, so they are major grazers in African savanna ecosystems.
