--these were one of the few insects calling on a brutally hot August day in the west section of Saguaro National Park. There seemed to be one male calling in each creosote (Larrea tridentata
) bush, but they were hard to spot. This is a petite grasshopper--length perhaps 15-20 mm. See the BugGuide account for references on identification. Thanks to Bob Behrstock on BugGuide for the identification--I was off-base in my attempts.
