, an obscure little grasshopper of southern Arizona and California, only representative of its genus in the United States. This was scared up off the ground by a lizard, and landed in a dense patch of prickly-pear. (Literature accounts of the species mention this "jump up into a shrub" behavior.) I had quite the time working my camera and flash into position for a shot without impaling myself! See BugGuide account for identification references and similar species. Length quoted in the literature is 19-25 mm.
