This nice old paper wasp was resting her frazzled wings and refreshing herself on a Baccharis blossom. Note the "V for Vespidae" tattoo on her forehead! Actually, wasps have two large compound eyes and three little "Ocelli" in a V pattern which act as secondary visual sensors, perhaps to detect shadows from approaching predators & wildflower dudes. This was a very windy morning at Jonathan Dickinson State Park but the fragrance of the Baccharis
was intoxicating and the entire bush was buzzing from the collective activity of winged insects!
