On a windy morning in the flatwoods a couple of weeks ago i noticed this little spider busily reinforcing her web. I carefully ducked under it and took a couple of pictures. This is the very common Spiny orb weaver. As kids, we called these "crab spiders", because they looked a little like crabs, but they are not related to crab spiders. Apparently they are quite variable. I often find them outside the door of my apartment or in my windows here in the mangrove swamp too. They are friendly. This one lives at Sweetbay Natural Area and is about 10mm wide.
