Description

A carpenter bee (une abeille charpentière) foraging for nectar on a blossoming saw palmetto. The little yellow mask on the head means this one's a boy. These large bees are loud and frisky buzzers and are often mistaken for bumblebees. They have shiny black, hairless abdomens while bumblebees are fuzzy. They nest by boring into dry, standing wood, preferably conifers (but sometimes homes). Males are very curious and guard their territories against other males so they are often seen hovering along trails. The males cannot sting. Juno Dunes Natural Area, Palm Beach County.
