Major Threats
Between 1900 and 1985 the forests of Benin, Ghana, and Ivory Coast declined in mass by: 96, 83, 72 per cent respectively (Fairhead and Leach 1998). Forest loss continues at a rate of 1.17% per annum throughout West Africa (FAO 2009); therefore loss of forest habitat due to agricultural and urban expansion is the main threat to this species. In West Africa, such future habitat loss is most likely going to be caused by conversion of land for smallholdings and urban demand for woodfuel (FAO 2009).
