There are over 2,500 species of centipede. Their name means “hundred feet.” Centipedes can actually have anywhere from 20 to over 300 legs spread over up to 177 body segments. The first segment has a pair of venom claws that are used to catch prey. The Tasmanian centipede has 12 pairs of legs when it hatches. It grows 3 more pairs later in life.
