250 - 1000 individuals
Comments: Total population is estimated at about 250-300 in the North Pacific (NMFS 1987, Right Whale Recovery Team 1990, Mayo and Marx 1990). The "eastern population" in the North Pacific "probably totals only tens of animals" (Brownell et al. 2001, Tynan et al. 2001, North Pacific Right Whale Recovery Team 2004). Observations of adults and calves in the Bering Sea in 2004 expanded the known eastern population to at least 25 individuals (NOAA 2004).
