Number of Occurrences
Note: For many non-migratory species, occurrences are roughly equivalent to populations.
Estimated Number of Occurrences: 21 - 80
Comments: Exact number of occurrences is unknown. At least 28 extant spawning aggregations are known from the following locations: Bahamas (three sites total at Cat Cay, Great Isaacs, and two sites at Long Island), Cuba (one on the northwestern coast, three sites on the southern coast), Mexico (seven known sites off the southern coast of Quintana Roo, including two on the east-southeast coast of Chinchorro Bank), Honduras (one site of the Bay Islands), Belize (six sites), Cayman Islands (five sites total off Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac), and British Virgin Islands (one site along the northeastern insular shelf) (Smith 1972; Tucker 1989; Aguilar-Perera 1990; Carter et al. 1990; Fine 1990; Beets and Friedlander 1992; Colin 1992; Tucker et al. 1993; Aguilar-Perera and Aguilar-Davila 1996; Sadovy, in press). fishermen report considerably more, approaching 50 sites (Sadovy, in press). At least a total of five spawning aggregations have disappeared because of overfishing from the following areas: Bermuda (two aggregations), northeastern Puerto Rico (one site), St. Thomas (one site), and St. Croix (at least one site) (Burnett-Herkes 1975, Olsen and LaPlace 1978, Beets and Friedlander 1992).
