is from the Florida Keys. They have been the primary visual study species among the stomatopods. Notice the three pseudopupils in the eye, the dark areas are the facets that are looking directly at you. The top and bottom portions are associated with spatial vision and depth perception (each eye is an independent range-finder), while the middle part of the eye adds color information. This animal is much more yellow than we normally get, and its carapace has an almost pinkish tint. Diet and habitat almost certainly play a roles in their coloration. This individual is a female, as females of this species characteristically have black spots all over their carapace.
