The pollinators are supposed to be flies, and the flowers are supposed to "imitate" carrion, and give no reward to the pollinators. Note added 24 June 2010: This photo was used in National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Wildflowers of North America. I just saw it at a bookstore--I opted not to get a copy, instead receiving a (small) license fee. It looks like a great book, but I have a whole shelf-full of wildflower guides already!
