Description
These spectacular grouse are in decline across their range though good numbers remain in the Breadalbane glens. They are very vulnerable to disturbance at the lek where the males fight & display to attract females. This image was taken from a car by a roadside lek -hence the intervening foliage, the birds here are very tolerant of vehicles but take flight if humans appear from the vehicle. The lek is active at dawn but males often gather at the lek in the late afternoon for a bit of "jousting practice" -at this time the light is better and they are less prone to disturbance. Image taken in the Breadalbane glens (Exact site NOT disclosed on map).
