بعد وجودها فى مناطق انتشارها الأصلية عبر المناطق الشرقية للولايات المتحدة والأجزاء الكندية المجاورة، اختفت نيكروفورس أمريكاناز فى الفترة من منتصف إلى أواخر القرن العشرين، وكان ديفيس Davis (1980) هو أول من لاحظ ذلك وتبعه اندرسون Anderson (1982) الذى تعرض للموضوع بشكل أكبر، ثم بيك واندرسون Peck and Anderson (1985) وبيك وكولبارس and Peck and Kaulbars (1987. وآخر هذه الأبحاث رسم خريطة للتسجيلات التاريخية، حيث لم تعرف جماعات باقية فى ذلك الوقت. ومنذ ذلك الحين، وعن طريق الحصر الذى شمل ولاية عقب أخرى، تم إكتشاف الجماعات المتبقية من هذا النوع فى رود ايلاند (جزيرة بلوك فقط؛ 1986)، وأوكلاهوما (1982)، ونبراسكا (1992)، واركنساس (1992)، وداكوتا الجنوبية (1995)، وكانساس (1996) وتكساس (2003).
