The red knot is the largest of the North American beach sandpipers, measuring approximately 24 cm in length with a wingspan up to 51 cm (Terres 1980; Paulson 2005). Sexes appear similar, but females are often slightly larger. Lifespan varies with environmental conditions and other factors, but individuals have been documented to live to at least 13 years of age under certain conditions (Terres 1980).
