Bicosoeca (bike-o-so-eek-a), one of only several genera of bicosoecid stramenopiles. This genus includes cells which live within loricae. The cell attaches to the lorica by the tip of a recurrent flagellum, the other flagellum extends out of the lorica and beats with an undulating beat. As with other stramenopiles, the (sub-microscopic) hairs on the flagellum draw a current of water towards the cell, and particles are intercepted by a shoulder, seen to the left of the top of this cell, and ingested. Cells usually project more, but can contract into the lorica by the action of the recurrent flagellum. Phase contrast.
