@Roderic Page: There used to be a file at http://ecat-dev.gbif.org/repository/checklist-export1.zip but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. Will check into it.

@gjolleyrogers: Great, just let us know -- for the benefit of others can you explain what you figured out? As I understand it, you are basically providing a set of taxa and their parents.

Helping a collegue prepare for the challend and I feel a little dense or perhaps blind. The only means I can see to record phylogeny are the DarwinCore Resource terms whilst these are adequate I would prefer not to invent a vocabulary. Have I missed a vital detail / resource?

The submission site is open for the Tree Challenge -- see the details on the EOL Phylogenetic Tree Challenge page.
Basically, you upload a file to the Global Names postbox.

I've posted some quick thoughts on the challenge here: http://iphylo.blogspot.com/2012/02/eol-phylogenetic-tree-challenge.html I think the challenge is a great idea, but I think it's time to be a little more radical in our conception of the tree of life.

I'll start discussion by asking how potential contestants would feel about posting early versions of their files publicly before the final submission date. Many modern contests these days do something like this in order to spur innovation, competition, and collaboration for even better solutions by the deadline.

Please note that the collection of EOL Browsing Classifications isn't complete -- some browsing hierarchies are coming to us via special processes (e.g. Catalogue of Life, ITIS, NCBI) so they don't automatically have collections of content.
