@Gregor Hagedorn: Yup, I think it might have to do with improper defaults being applied, but it doesn't affect all images -- my Flickr stuff is ok (e.g. http://eol.org/data_objects/15559343. Suspect that it impacts providers who don't give us object-by-object licenses.

I checked about 10-15 Zookeys images: the problem seems to be systematic.
