Scientific illustrations are an important part of scientific communication, highlighting observations and details. Before the age of photography, illustrations were one of the main sources of visualization in science.
Visit the Biodiversity Heritage Library's Flickr site to see more illustrations. The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is a consortium of natural history and botanical libraries working to digitize and make freely accessible the legacy literature of biodiversity held in their collections. Each species page on EOL has a link to BHL literature under the "Literature" tab.
