A lone male wolf crossed the border into California from Oregon 28 December 2011. This is the first wild wolf in the state since extirpation in 1924. The animal left the state near where it entered at the end of February 2012, but stayed near the border for some time. As of this annotation (3/7/12) I'm not sure if the wolf has moved farther north or is still in the border area.

This subspecies was recently re-found in the state. It had not been seen in many years.

These African horses were introduced to the Hearst Ranch at San Simeon along the California coast. A small semi-wild herd remains.
